Medicare is a federally administered insurance program that helps pay for health care expenses with a unique benefit structure for people aged 65 or older.
Medicare is also available to people under 65 with certain disabilities, and people of any age with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
Below are thoughts you'll want to consider in your decision:
Medicare is a “fee-for-service” system, where a Medicare beneficiary is charged a fee for each health care service received. Basic Medicare helps with the cost of health care, but it does not cover all medical expenses, nor the cost of most long-term care. To cover more of their health care costs, many individuals pay for additional Medicare policies to supplement what Medicare pays.
Part A
Also called hospital insurance, Medicare Part A covers the cost of hospital care, a skilled nursing facility, or hospice. Medicare Part A also covers some home health services.
Part B
Also called medical insurance, Medicare Part B covers most medically necessary doctors’ services, preventive care, durable medical equipment, hospital outpatient services, laboratory tests, x-rays, mental health care, and some home health and ambulance services.
Part D
Also called a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage.
Part C
The Medicare Advantage (MA) Program, Part C, combines coverage for Parts A, B and at times, Part D benefits. These plans are administered by private insurance companies, rather than the Federal government. In most cases, you must use the plan’s in-network doctors and facilities. Some Medicare Advantage Plans include Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage.
A Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy helps pay some of the health care costs that Medicare Parts A and B don’t cover, like: Copayments, Coinsurance, and Deductibles. Medigap policies are administered by private insurance companies.
